Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) is a film based on a book by Arthur Golden. It won three Oscars from the Academy Awards, and thirteen top awards and 27 nominations from other film industry associations.

The story is a romantic drama about a young peasant Japanese girl who is sold to a geisha house, trained in the artistic and social skills required of a geisha, and later becomes the most celebrated geisha in Kyoto. The storyline takes place between 1929 and the late 1940s. This is a beautiful film with a fantastic cast and musical score, and I highly recommend it to all.

Unfortunately, for no reason that I can understand or imagine, China has banned this film from being shown there! That is really a shame since the lead character is played by the beautiful Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi (Ziyi Zhang in the West).

(For additional photos of Ziyi see my photo albums.)

well... I saw the illegal DVD alread, It's a good movie. smileyI also like the Zhang Ziyi. She is a good actress. Actually u know (In china is full of illegal DVD. so even they show the legal one, still most of people buy illegal DVD, becouse it's just 5 yuan. or even cheaper somewhere. seems not really anyone seriously controlling the sale of illegal stuff. smileyThere's probably as many illegal sales people in the streets than there are Starbucks in the US!) smiley

hahaha... I never considered illegal, pirated copies! And I love your comparison of people selling illegal DVDs to the number of Starbucks in the US; you obviously have a tremendious number of illegal sales people!

Wen, you've seen the movie and liked it. It does not contain any politics except in the context of WWII, and even then it only addresses the fact a war is taking place. Can you imagine any reason whatsoever why the Chinese government would ban the film? I cannot figure that one out!

I read that the government officials are worried that the two actresses' potrayals might evoke memories of Japanese wartime aggression towards mainland women, it could evoke for example the memories of the Rape of Nanking (between December 1937 and March 1938). And that showing Chinese stars playing Japanese geisha also could provoke public anger at a time when anti-Japanese sentiment in China is running high...

yeah, actually lots of Chinese have hard time accepting the chinese actress playing a role of a geisha. chinese forums are full of people talking bad about her. poor girl! Personally I don't feel bad about herself but I still can't feel totally relaxed and easy about Japanese. There are a lot of tensions between the two countries... smiley

Thom, I agree with you on pirated copies. However in China the culture is somewhat different. For me, as a western living in China pirated copies are sometimes the only way for 3 main reasons:

1) Most movies are not available as legal, official copies. The selection of movies that become available is very very limited and mostly consists of older movies. smiley

2) Of those movies that are available about 50% seems to have been dubbed to Chinese with no English audio or subtitles. smiley

3) Most legal DVD's are region coded (which is very stupid system) so I can't play them on my laptop. smiley

Anyway, I've tried pirated movies and they're generally low quality and don't work very well so I tend to not watch movies at all these days. I buy legal DVD's when possible but for the reasons listed above my choices are limited. The price of legal DVD's is also still too high for most ordinary Chinese but fortunately companies like Walmart are starting to sell DVD movies for about 15-20 yuan, which should be find for most people. But this also brings us to the justification of region coding and lack of English on the discs - they don't want the legal copies leak out of the country.
