I think it would be cool if each day you gave away 5k points. Like, give away. The best daily post gets 5k points. Or you can use 50 points to buy a lottery ticket. THat would be neat.

Well, we've tried various ways of giving points but the problem is that most people don't seem to want free points. Like, right now you could get up to 6000 points for listing your favorite websites. Not very hard, right? But no... there's a few interesting replies but that's all. Giving 5000 to someone randomly would basically just encourage staying silent and doing nothing.

The lottery is an interesting idea... smiley

I submitted yesterday. When *should* I be getting my 2k points for posting a website. Why would giving 5k to *a random* person encourage being silent?

Have I maybe been way too much on the computer?

I think it would be cool to have daily competitions... it doesn´t have to be 5k, but there could be a prize for the best post of the day... that would encourage people to really write, and not just post smiley to get the 20 points...
5. Nolan | 2007-11-19 | English
I think you are right. Maybe just 50 pts then?
6. Jani | 2007-11-19 | English
Well, did you know that hot forum topics are awarded 1500 points each? We regularly mark topics, blogs and photos hot, so basically posting stuff that other people will find interesting is still the best way to get points.

Daily competition sounds fun... but we'll have to see if and when anyone has time to run it. Volunteers? smiley
7. Silvia | 2007-11-19 | English
What do you mean volunteers? Can anyone host a competition? How does that work?
8. Jani | 2007-11-19 | English
Basically giving points is easy and in fact we love giving them, for a good reason. The trouble is for a daily competition to be fun, someone would have to come up with something - daily. It could be totally informal even, just a post on the forum and the replies. And someone would need to pick the winner. That's another tough job, unless if the competition is such that the winner is clear (such as getting the correct answer first). If anyone wants to do something like that I can promise we will be happy to grant some points as a reward every day.

Interesting and popular competitions should probably also get "hot" nomination, so the person organizing them would have a chance to earn some points too. smiley

So I could do something like post a forum where I would add a new question every day, and the first person to get the right answer would get, say, 50 points. And in the end of the month, the person who got the highest number of first right answers, would win, say, 200 points, for example? And Xiha would assign the points for these people?
10. Jani | 2007-11-19 | English
Yeah, that would work. The winner could get a lot more than that at the end of the month, to add some excitement, too. We'd be happy to sponsor this type of competition, it sounds it could be fun...
11. Silvia | 2007-11-19 | English
I think I´d like to try that... I could start tomorrow, next monday, or next month...Which do you think is best?Do I just post the forum explaining how it´s gonna work? I need to know how many points Xiha would agrre to assign daily, and for the champion...
12. Jani | 2007-11-19 | English
Hmm well... let's say we give 100 points for the day's winner and then the month's winner will get 5000 points? We haven't done this before so it's hard to say. But hey, why wait? Let's kick it off tomorrow! smiley
13. Silvia | 2007-11-19 | English
Okay! I´ll post the explanation and the first question tomorrow morning... let´s see if it works!! I think it will be fun!!
14. Agatha | 2007-11-19 | English
Just a thought...for the daily question thing, some people can't get online or don't come in in the beginning of the day...i don't think it would be fair for the first person to get the points if some people aren't online...
On Neopets, they have the same thing but they have a pool of points and split it between all the people who get it right...although they have the people submit answers so they can't see the other people's posts
15. Jani | 2007-11-19 | English
Well, it's just about having some fun. We'll see how it goes. It's always the wrong time for someone. If it gets popular we can think of making some type of "competition system" which would let you host small competitions in a more organized manner, but I think for now that's not really necessary... if you are too late, you can still try to read only the question and see if you would get it right. smiley

oooh! just keep suggesting ways, nolan!
17. Nolan | 2007-11-20 | English
How about monthly competitions? I would dearly like to hold those!
18. Jing Jing | 2007-11-21 | English
you mean users can be the hosts?
19. Jing Jing | 2007-12-19 | English
but naturally it would be unfair if you made a competition designed for a friend to win...
20. Jani | 2007-12-19 | English
Right... XIHA would not accept that. Take a look at Silvia's competition to see how to do it right.
21. Jing Jing | 2007-12-20 | English
okay, maybe i'll start one...
