These are photos from Kivenlahti, a small neighborhood in the west side of Espoo in Finland. The original name is Stensvik, which is Swedish and the history dates back as a small village for hundreds of years. The first recorded notes of Stensvik are from 1540, when the area consisted of 5 farms.

Stensvikistä gained slightly more weight when a brick factory was founded in the area. The factory produced bricks for the fortresses in Helsinki and the Finland coastline.

In 1966 famous Finnish designed Alvar Aalto created the blueprint for the modernization of Kivenlahti. The brick factory was replaced by a shopping mall. Schools and apartments were built and much of the old architecture was demolished. The area offers beautiful coastal living and the coastline is quite full of apartment buildings.

The first wave of modern Kivenlahti residents moved in during 1971 and by 1976 the population was already 7.000. Ten years later the population exceeded 10.000 and currently there are about 17.000 people living in the area.
