After getting married we followed the Chinese tradition and paid a visit to my wife's home village to see her family and relatives. Our destination was actually two villages; her mom and dad were from two two separate villages that are in a walking distance from each other. The first stop was her dad's village called Xi Jie Cun which means West Street Village. The name comes from the location of the village on the west compared to other nearby village, and the main street of the village heading towards west. But the name is hundreds of years old so it's hard to know the exact original meaning!
The second village was Wen's mom's home village called Wa Gou Cun, which means Tile Ditch Village. If you're wondering what is a "tile ditch", it's the ditch between tiles on the roof of a building where the water flows down in the rain! I don't really know why they call it that, but it's pretty funny name anyway!
I was the first foreign visitor in both of the villages, which have been around for a thousand years or so. Needless to say I was like a celebrity, and everybody gathered to take a look.
